In Her Footsteps
Trevor recently was part of the documentary team in the limited cinema release of “In Her Footsteps” a documentary about poverty relief in India.
The project was the brainchild of Opportunity International, and partnering with production company Karbon, produced the 90min film for cinema release as well as a shorter 45min version for TV.
The project involved taking 20 Australian women on a trip through India to see first hand how the concept of micro finance really impacts and improves the futures of the families involved, and to see up close how their money changes peoples lives.
Along with cameraman Mike Eady, Trevor found himself tracking the tour in ‘Survivor’ style, capturing the journey as it happened, no set-ups, no rehearsals, reality as it happened.
“The greatest challenge was in being prepared to move at a moments notice to capture the events on the fly” said Trevor. “ We would set out each day carrying everything we needed on us as we wouldn’t be back in the hotel till late at night, and couldn’t store anything anywhere, so we had to be prepared. Our aim was to take the viewer on a journey into the world to truly show the struggle, dignity and progress of the amazing Indian people”
Being involved in the project from location to post production and final mix was a huge advantage for Trevor. “ I was in the field constantly thinking about how to maximise the impact of what we were seeing when we got home, one of the best tools we had was a handheld Zoom recorder. I was able to feed the camera lapel and boom mic for dialogue capture while recording the generic sounds around me in stereo with the Zoom. The result back in the studio was excellent as whenever we had to lay in additional atmospheres, crowd sounds, natural FX etc, we had them from location, we didn’t have to access a sound effect library”
The result is a much more homogenous sounding result, with the real sounds of India adding to the impact of the excellent camera work from Mick. Hopefully, In Her Footsteps will encourage people to get involved with Opportunity International and to become a part of their incredible ministry.
