Labelling

Most of the time it doesn’t seem to really matter. In fact you don’t even notice most of the time, however, when things go wrong it causes multiple mistakes, lost time, frustration and poor results.

It’s a simple thing, no great skill required, just attention to detail and being willing to put the time in to get it right.

What am I talking about?

Labelling.

Flat Fader Mix

How often do we see audio consoles set up with the faders all over the place - some way up, some way down - and this tells the simple story that the mix is out of control.

Here's a system that will give you a great starting point for your mix, and will allow things to stay in control as the gig progresses.

Recall-safe

Digital consoles have the ability to save "scenes" or settings, and to recall them when needed.

Here's a great tip which will help safeguard you from making accidental changes during a live show (and save you from some embarrassment also...)

Double Patching

Sounds great through front-of-house but lousy in foldback... how often do we hear that complaint?

Problem is, that generally, from the console, you only have one set of EQ per channel...  which means that you have a choice: good front-of-house or good in foldback, but not both.  How do you keep the audience and the artists happy?

Always have a plan "B"

(by Trevor Beck)

I was recently the Audio Director for a series of sporting broadcasts where we took the feed of the game from overseas, added commentary from the studio, then it was re-broadcast both locally to Australia and overseas again too.

We had rehearsed our opening, talked through the flow of the show, when we would cross to the live action at kick-off and the like, so all was prepared.
